Chestnut First found growing naturally in regions of Asia and north Greece, today the chestnut tree is cultivated in many areas of Europe and North America.
Many of the parts of thehorse chestnut tree, including the seeds, leaves, and bark, have been used medicinally. However, it is now believed that only the seeds of the Horse Chestnut offer proven medicinal value.Aesculus chinensis, the Chinese chestnut (Chinese: qi ye shu), is a tree species in the genus Aesculus found in eastern Asia.
The seed of Aesculus chinensis contains triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids, such as aescuflavoside and aescuflavoside A, which are glycosides of quercetin. The seed extract is a mixture of saponins, standardized to around 20 percent aescin (escin) is used for its venotonic effect, vascular protection, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging properties.
Aescin is the main active compound in chestnut, and is responsible for most of its medicinal properties.
